How to Humanize AI Content (Without Making It Weird or Robotic)
AI tools are amazing. They can write blog posts, generate social media captions, and even whip up love letters if you’re feeling particularly uninspired. But here’s the problem: AI-generated content often feels…off. Like a robot trying to pass as human and failing miserably.
If you want to use AI content without sounding like an emotionless automaton, you need to add a little humanity. Here’s how to do it, step by step.
1. Add a Personal Touch
AI can spit out facts all day, but it can’t share a story about that time you accidentally drank a quadruple-shot espresso before a client call (and had to mute yourself every five minutes to avoid screaming). That’s the kind of stuff people relate to.
How to Personalize AI Content:
- Insert Anecdotes: Share real-life experiences to illustrate your points.
- Add Opinions: AI plays it safe—don’t be afraid to take a stance.
- Use “I” and “You”: Write like you’re talking to a friend, not addressing a boardroom.
Example:
AI says: “SEO is critical for website performance.”
You say: “SEO saved my butt when I accidentally tanked my blog traffic by ignoring meta descriptions.”
2. Edit for Flow and Voice
AI content often feels…disjointed. Like it’s trying to hit all the points without connecting them. That’s where you come in.
How to Edit AI Content:
- Smooth Transitions: Make sure one idea flows naturally into the next.
- Inject Humor: A well-placed joke or playful phrase can make a huge difference.
- Simplify Overcomplicated Sentences: AI loves throwing in unnecessary jargon.
3. Use Unpredictable Words and Phrasing
AI has a tendency to use the same phrases over and over (looking at you, “in today’s digital world”). Break up the monotony with quirky or unexpected wording.
Examples:
- Instead of “content creation is important,” try “content creation is the bacon of the digital breakfast.”
- Swap “optimize your website” for “make your website shine like a freshly polished boot.”
Random Thought:
Ever notice how AI never mentions totally weird, relatable things, like how your cat always walks across your keyboard when you’re mid-sentence? Throwing in something like that keeps people engaged.
4. Break Up the Walls of Text
AI loves chunky paragraphs that could double as brick walls. Don’t do that.
- Use short sentences and bullet points to keep things skimmable.
- Add headings that grab attention (and make Google happy).
- Sprinkle in images, gifs, or charts to break the monotony.
Pro Tip:
A random gif of a confused raccoon can turn a bland tutorial into something memorable. Don’t overdo it, but don’t be afraid to get weird.
5. Inject Emotion
AI is smart, but it’s emotionally tone-deaf. People want to feel something when they read your content.
- Empathy: Acknowledge your reader’s struggles.
- Excitement: Show genuine enthusiasm for your topic.
- Humor: Self-deprecation goes a long way in making content relatable.
6. Add Unexpected References
AI content rarely goes off-script, but humans thrive on tangents and random connections.
- Pop Culture: “Using AI for SEO is like letting Iron Man do your taxes—efficient, but kind of intimidating.”
- Personal Stories: “The first time I used ChatGPT, it accidentally turned my blog post into a Shakespearean sonnet. 10/10 would recommend.”
- Historical Facts: “Backlinks are the modern-day equivalent of Renaissance patrons—they make you look good, but they want something in return.”
7. Keep It Imperfect (Yes, Really)
AI tries to be perfect, but humans are messy, and that’s what makes us relatable. Don’t edit out every quirky phrase or casual aside—those are what make your writing feel real.
Example:
AI says: “Email marketing is an effective strategy for audience engagement.”
You say: “Email marketing is great—except when you accidentally hit send on a draft titled ‘Fix This Later.’ Not that I’d know.”
8. Use AI as a Jumping-Off Point, Not the Final Product
The best way to humanize AI content is to treat it as a rough draft. Let the AI do the heavy lifting, then go in and make it your own.
AI checkers to detect AI content (or bypass it)...
All those AI checkers are totally broken, but it's a big business. People are afraid of inauthenticity and they want a way to check or detect AI so they aren't being hoodwinked. There's are ways to detect AI content, but it's mostly about getting used to all the common signs of AI writing - the problem is, it's really not bad. It's clean and organized, clever and funny even - I've seen a ton of facebook and reddit posts that are straight Ai (even some crazy emotional stories!) but it gets a ton of likes and comments because it sounds pretty good. If you're used to working with chatGPT though, there are definitely words and phrases it repeats, it has a default "style" that is hard to train out (not THAT hard, but most people just don't try hard enough to get genuinely unique content).
The good news is you can TRICK all those AI checkers by getting AI to write really amazing unique content; there's even some simple "deprogramming tools" you can use to spin your content
Final Thoughts: Robots Need Humans (For Now)
AI tools are powerful, but they can’t replace your voice, your stories, or your unique perspective. Use them as an assistant, not a replacement, and your content will resonate every time.
And hey, if you’re feeling stuck, just throw in a random raccoon gif. Works for me.
